Habits don't change overnight. For now, it's still a habit to be a wolf.
And he is. He's all wolf. A wolf who glides silently in and out of a cabin, the door of which is never shut any longer. Murray greets him easily every day, sometimes shares his coffee and food. The wolf offers to share his kills, but the man declines politely.
Sometimes they sit on the porch together, watching the mountains. The wolf feels a delicious warmth creep into his bones when he stretches out on the bare, warm wood. He stretches his toes as long as they go and curls his long pink tongue in a yawn.
Murray laughs at his yawn, and the wolf blinks lazily back.
There is little affection there to be seen, but a great deal underneath. Murray pats the wolf sometimes, cautiously, as if not sure he's allowed. Talks to him, too. The wolf understands most of what he has to say, and always listens. He gets to know the man, gets to know he reached Murray's dreams, if only that once.
It was an important once.
They don't have much to do all day but take care of themselves and each other. And watch the mountains, and get to know each other.
Sometimes it all becomes too much. The wolf has to run, has to go away and run very far and fast through the mountains. He pants so hard he feels like he's dying when he pushes himself that far.
But always, eventually, he turns and comes back.
It feels like home now. He can't leave, even if Murray calls the authorities on him. He doesn't show any sign of doing so, though.
Odd, restless discontentment burns in the wolf's bones.
Murray seems content, happy. Why shouldn't he be? He has a wolf — almost a dog — for a new pet. He can keep him here forever. Somehow, the wolf cannot stand to leave.
He knows he is captured in another way, a new way. And, although he still doesn't want to face it, he knows it is time. At least now being human no longer means being like the ones who hurt him. It means being like Murray.
Only trouble is, he's afraid. Who knows what has changed for him, about him? What if Murray, so easy-going (once he's had his coffee) isn't a fan? He might not be.
Most of the wolf knows that it wasn't his fault he was taken captive and treated so cruelly. Most, but not all of him. Sometimes he thinks he probably deserved it, or something about him was innately wrong so it was inevitable someone would see the wrongness in him and hurt him for it.
He hopes that isn't the case. He hopes Murray won't see him that way.
